Wines from #ScorchedTerroir Around the Globe for #winePW

When I extended an invitation to the #winePW bloggers earlier this month, I wasn't sure what I planned to uncork and pair as we talked about Scorched Terroir and Volcanic Wines. So. Many. Possibilities.

I decided that I would virtually circle the globe instead of trying to decide on a single wine.

Four Volcanic Wines...
I started my globe trotting in Santorini, pairing Smoky, Spicy Clams with Assyrtiko. Funny story: completely unaware of what I was pouring and why, my husband queried, "Does this seem smoky to you?" I picked my jaw up off the table and asked him to expand on that. After a second sip, he continued, "No, maybe I was imaging it...if you don't taste it. Do you taste the smoke?" I definitely did taste it, but thought it was only a figment of my imagination. But Jake confirmed it.

Next I poured a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc with a Passionfruit Pavlova. Sileni's Sauvignon Blanc has an intriging mix of kiwi, passionfruit and pineapple aromas. On the palate, it's fresh with a lingering acidity. I had initially thought I'd pair this with a savory dish, but was swayed by the taste of the tropics.

Coming a little closer to home, I made Millet-Crusted Lamb Lollipops with a Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa. Because it was so hot - and I didn't want to be in the kitchen for any longer than necessary - I opted to make a quick dish of millet-crusted lamb lollipops. And I plated it with a dollop of some SavoryTomato Bacon Jam. Had I not had that in the fridge, I think this all would have paired nicely with a cherry chutney. Next time...

I finished the tour with Pasta Con Le Sarde and a Sicilian red. One of my favorite things about Sicily: the seafood. When we stayed in Palermo, I hauled the family to the market to get fresh seafood for dinner. We ate fish, sea snails, and whatever else caught my eye. When we were on Ustica, fisherman rolled carts through the cobblestone streets, bellowing, "Pesci! Pesci!" I remember sending my cousin down to the street to stop one of the fisherman when I saw swordfish on the cart.

The Conversation...

This month the French Winophiles group is looking at affordable wines from Burgundy.  Host Cindy of Grape Experiences wrote: "Burgundy, or Bourgogne, is known for its wines of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir... as well as Aligote, Gamay, Sauvignon, César, Pinot Beurot, Sacy, Melon in lesser quantities. Many of the well-known wines are quite expensive, but there are plenty of values to be found." Quick Pickled Red Onions and Radishes

If you've been reading my blog for even a short amount of time, you probably know how much I love to pickle things. I was just telling a friend you can pickle - with vinegar - or you can ferment - with salt - for similar delicious effect. The latter has digestive benefits and I love to do that, but when I need that pop of sour flavor quickly, I whip up quick pickles that are ready in as little as a day or two. I've Pickled Blueberries , Pickled Asparagus , Pickled Cranberries , Pickled Pumpkin , and even Pickled Chard Stems ! This I did last night for an upcoming recipe challenge that requires I include radishes. Ummmm...of course I'm pickling them! Ingredients  makes 1 quart jar radishes, trimmed and sliced organic red onions, peeled and thinly sliced (I used a mandolin slicer) 3/4 C vinegar (I used white distilled vinegar) 3/4 C water 3 T organic granulated sugar 1 T salt (I used some grey sea salt) 6 to 8 grinds of black pepper Proce
